SUMMARY:Regional High Potency Synthetic Opioid (HPSO) Safety Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Spokane and surrounding areas \nThis symposium is the result of a collaboration between the Department of Health\, the Washington Association of Child Advocate Programs\, DCYF\, the Administrative Office of the Courts and many other child welfare system partners.  This training is designed to better understand the potency and potential lethality of HPSOs and how we can keep service providers\, caregivers\, families\, and children safe when HPSO are present and are being actively used with a heavy focus on ensuring that we all keep everyone safe.   We plan on doing a number of similar trainings across the state between now and the first part of next year as well. \nThe morning will feature presentations by the Department of Health on the current science around what we know about HPSOs\, substance use disorder professionals about treatment and recovery process and brief presentations from lived experts\, legal professionals and others in the child welfare system. \nIn the afternoon\, we will engage in facilitated conversations about how we can all keep each other safe within our respective roles\, discuss scenarios where there is active use of HPSOs and build safety and case plans that will keep children\, caregivers and families safe based on the information from the morning sessions. \nThere will be no cost to attend (but donations will be appreciated!) and lunch will be provided.  We’re also working on providing CLEs and CJEs for this session as well\, and we hope to have child care options available as well.  To make sure you receive the registration announcement\, please sign up for our mailing list here

SUMMARY:There's No Place Like Home: Understanding the Harms of Removal and Family Separation in Child Welfare
DESCRIPTION:The idea of taking kids first and sorting it out later to “avoid” abuse is one of the biggest paradoxes in the history of\ngovernmental practice. In 2023\, Washington became one of the first states in the nation to statutorily require dependency courts to consider the likely harms a child will experience if removed from the care of their parents. This training will introduce participants to the concept of “harm of removal” in the context of child welfare and demonstrate use of practical tools and resources that support court systems in identifying and responding to the trauma of forced family separation. \nThis webinar will be recorded and made available for later viewing. \nThis webinar is hosted by the Administrative Office of the Courts’ Family & Youth Justice Programs\, in partnership with the Office of Public Defense Parent Representation Program and Akin. \nRegister Here: Webinar Registration – Zoom \n
